Japan's revised Strategic Energy Plan aims to increase renewable and nuclear energy use to 70% of the electricity mix by 2040.
The government targets 40%-50% from renewables, 20% from nuclear, and a reduction in thermal power to 30%-40%. Renewable energy expansion faces challenges,
with solar power needing to more than double and offshore wind projects experiencing delays due to high costs. Perovskite solar cells are seen as a potential breakthrough,
but commercialization hurdles remain. Nuclear power is now considered essential for a stable energy supply, with efforts to restart reactors.
Japan aims to raise nuclear power’s share from 8.5% in 2023 to 20% by 2040. Currently, 14 of 26 reactors under safety review have been restarted, but further progress is needed.
The plan marks a shift by removing language about reducing nuclear dependency. Business leaders emphasize the importance of nuclear energy and call for
government-led initiatives, including building new reactors.
